Extreme and rapid changes in temperature and humidity affect all concrete adversely. Concrete has a natural and inherent tendency to expand and contract with changes in the climatic conditions - a phenomenon taken into account by experienced stonemasons who build expansion joints into sidewalks and other structures. Your Henri fountain has been designed and manufactured with the weather in mind. The concrete mix itself contains additives which enhance its elastic qualities. Some components are re-inforced with steel. Sometimes small, innocuous surface shrinkage cracks will inevitably appear but your fountain will not crack through if one important rule is followed: Do not allow water to collect and freeze in the bowl, shell or in waterways and cavities. Never allow the fountain to sit in a pool of ice! Shells and bowls left exposed to freezing conditions may shale and crack due to the mechanical force of water solidifying and then expanding along the surface of the concrete. You should therefore either set up your fountain indoors in winter in a location in which it will never he subjected to freezing temperatures or, if it is not suitable for indoor use, it should be dismantled and stored in your garage, cellar or garden shed. If this is not practical, then you must at least protect your fountain from ice formation. First, remove the fountain top and pump and store these indoors if at all possible. Empty the fountain of all water before placing some absorbent material (an old blanket, sheet or hessian are ideal) into each bowl. This will absorb any condensation which may form. Then cover the entire fountain with a specially- designed winter cover, available from all Henri Studio Dealers. Alternatively, cover the fountain with a heavy-duty plastic sheet which should be securely fixed with string or tape. If you follow these simple instructions, you will protect your fountain from the ravages of winter and preserve its intricate sculpted details and fine paint finish.
